Crowns and Bridges
Keeping our teeth healthy and beautiful is something we all strive for, but sometimes teeth can become damaged despite our best efforts. Illness, trauma, medication, decay, and other factors can leave teeth cracked, damaged, or weakened, as well as looking less than their best. If this has happened to one or more of your teeth, a dental crown or bridge may be a good restoration option for you.
Dental crowns offer stability and protection for teeth that have been damaged or weakened while improving the aesthetic of your smile. They can be made to match your natural teeth, offering a beautiful restoration that is virtually indistinguishable from your real teeth. Bridges offer a way to permanently replace missing or extracted teeth by using crowns to anchor a prosthetic tooth into your mouth, eliminating gaps in your smile caused by missing teeth quickly and effectively.
What Is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are a cap, made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, gold, or other materials. These caps are custom-made to match the color and shape of your teeth. The crown is cemented into place and is not removable. Dental crowns offer the dual benefits of strengthening a weakened or damaged tooth while improving the appearance of your smile.
Frisco dentist Dr. Chitre can use crowns to treat a variety of structural and cosmetic issues including misshapen or too-small teeth, chipped or cracked teeth, and teeth that have been damaged through illness or excessive decay. Crowns are specifically recommended after a root canal, because the loss of blood flow to the tooth can leave it brittle and susceptible to cracking or breaking.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
Bridges consist of one or more crowns attached to a prosthetic tooth or teeth, most commonly with a crown on either side of the prosthetic. The crowns are fitted onto healthy teeth, and the prosthetic tooth becomes a "bridge" over the site of your missing tooth or teeth. This creates a permanent, fixed (non-removable) restoration for missing teeth and may be an alternative treatment option if you are not a good candidate for dental implants.
How Crowns and Bridges Are Made
In most cases, the first step toward a crown is preparing your tooth (or teeth). Crown preparation consists of removing any decayed or damaged tooth material and reshaping the tooth to fit underneath a crown. If very little of your natural tooth remains, a buildup and post may be added to offer a stronger anchor for your crown.
After the tooth is prepped, we will take an impression of your teeth. The lab will use this to create a crown that will look completely natural and match the shape and size of your teeth. Dr. Chitre will determine the color of your natural teeth so that the crown or bridge can be made to match. A temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth to protect it while your crown is made.
Once the crown is ready, you will return to our Frisco dental office to seat the crown. Dr. Chitre will check the fit and shape of the crown and can perform adjustments to ensure it looks and feels just right. Once the crown or bridge is ready, it is cemented into place. With proper home care and regular office exams, your new crown or bridge will last you for years to come.
